Song meanings

Your Love Is A Lie

This song was based on Chuck’s experience – his ex-girlfriend cheated on him. Anyways, the writing of this song was something like a therapy. This is what Chuck said in one interview:

“It’s a song about falling in love with someone and being surprised and very disappointed that they’d do something like that to you when you give them your heart. I think a lot of people feel very betrayed. We wrote a song and it feels good to write about it because at the time that’s all I could think about.”

In one interview, the guys joked, that the original chorus was, instead of “Your love is just a LIE!”, supposed to be: “I want you to DIE!”

Save You

One of the most emotive song of the new self-titled album wrote Pierre in the period of time, when he was coping with the report, that his brother Jay has a cancer. In the song, Pierre is singing about how he felt, when he couldn’t help his brother, even though he wanted to so badly. By the way, Jay is now going very well without any more cancer.

What If

The inspiration for the last song of the third SP album was the TV show Heroes – particularly the character of Peter Petrelli, who is trying to save the world. This is what Pierre said about it:

“In the last few years we watched TV a lot and we really got into Heroes. It was a little bit inspired by the character of Peter Petrelli, who feels abused and he’s trying to do a good thing, even though a lot of people is against him. That’s how we saw it for our song. I think that if somebody’s trying to do something important or something that should look a bit controversial, if you go throught it, you must go through obstacles and it’s a bit confusing because you don’t know if you want to do it or not. Look at somebody like Al Gore, he took all his courage and started doing crazy things and I think that a lot of people are probably against him. It’s about such a feeling you have, when you’re going through such things.”

Untitled (How could this happen to me?)

This balad, which appeared on the Still Not Getting Any album supports the campaign “Don’t Drink And Drive” and not even because this topic appeared in the music video to this single, but mainly because the boys themselves experienced a loss of their two friends, who dies in a alcohol-related car accident. Here is one video, which supports this campaign (the guys appeared there along with Lindsay Lohan):

My Alien

It was said that this song is about one of Pierre’s ex-girlfriends, who was very strange and was just like an alien.

I Can Wait Forever

Probably the only true love song by Simple Plan deals with Pierre’s current relationship with Lachelle Farrar, who’s been her girlfriend for about 4 years now. So, let’s just hope that their relationship will last forever.

When I’m Gone

The first single out of the third Simple Plan albumis about leaving and moving to the next level. This is what Pierre said about WIG in one interview:

“The motto of this song is “you’ll miss me when I’m gone”, so it’s about this girl, who leaves me and then realizes that it was a mistake and starts seing me everywhere.”

Friend (Reset)

This song, included on the album “No Limits” by Reset (Pierre’s and Chuck’s ex-band), wrote Pierre after Chuck’s leaving the band. You can find there lots of cues, which may indicate you that this song is about Chuck:

“We built this little boat
And sailed it off the sea.”

(this part means that they started a band, which they “sailed” off the music industry)

“I bougt some sticks
And put them in your hands.”

(this part definitely expresses a drummer)

“But don’t expect me to be smiling
When we meet again.
I think you’ll understand,
I don’t think I wanna be your friend.”

(this part is probably showing us that Chuck left the band, due to the arguments he had with Pierre)

“And you can count how much we owe you,
But you just lost something much greater.
You just lost your best friend.”

(I think we can be happy that these two guys had patched up in the end and became best friends again.)
