Chuck places second in Canada Reads 2019 as an advocate for the book ‘Homes’

Only one single vote decided the fate of this year’s edition of the Canada Reads battle of the books, in which in a series of discussions, one books is eventually named the book that all of Canada should read and some of its profits are then forwarded to charities involved in the literary field. It was a duel between two panelists – Ziya Tong, who advocated for ‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen, which delved into his own story as an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor, and Chuck Comeau, who’s chosen book was ‘Homes’ by a Syrian refugee in Canada Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and his teacher Winnie Yeung, who helped him tell the story of his family’s escape from the civil war torn country.

The final debate took place yesterday in Toronto, Canada and it was a very hard-fought battle from all sides. Luckily, during the debates, both remaining panelists once again received some words of encouragement from some important people – for Chuck it was first Hafedh Al Rabeeah, the father of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, who thanked Chuck for taking an interest in his son’s book and helping him in this way and the second voice message for Chuck was then left by his own wife Jacqueline and his son London, who wished him all the best in his debating efforts. If you want to hear these messages, you can head over to mark 30:21 of the video below.

In the end, after all panelists have cast their votes and after the first two votes of the already eliminated panelists went to each of the remaining advocates, it was up to Yanic Truesdale to cast the final, deciding vote. Unfortunately for Chuck, Yanic decided to change his mind in the end, stating that while he came to the finale, thinking he would be voting for Homes to win, the final words of Ziya Tong, in which expressed her wish for people to read her chosen book because generation of people like Max Eisen will not be with us much longer and this is own of the last true accounts of Holocaust we will ever be able to read, made him vote differently – against ‘Homes’..

‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen, advocated by Ziya Tong, has then become the winner of Canada Reads 2019.

After Chuck’s loss, he headed over to Twitter to express his thoughts about the competition and uged people to still make sure to pick up ‘Homes’ in their bookshop to help spread the word about acceptance of the Muslim culture in our society:

“Very disappointed and crushed I couldn’t get the job done on Canada Reads and secure a victory for my incredible book ‘Homes’. I’m sorry to everyone who loved the book so passionately even more importantly, to the authors, Winnie and Bakr, and their families. I tried my best. I urge everyone to pick up this book and discover this amazing story of hope, love, courage and resilience. My wish is that despite our loss today, it keeps on reaching more people and keeps on opening people’s minds and hearts. This is the book we need right now. Thank you to my fellow panelists Ziya Tong, Joe Zee, Lisa Ray and Yanic Truesdale for an incredible week and a life-changing experience. Thank you to Ali Hassan and the entire CBC Books team as well. You were all phenomenal.”

Chuck aces Day 3 of Canada Reads’ debates and advances to this battle of books’ finale!

Day 3 of Canada Reads where the panelists of the three remaining books kept relentlessly advocating for their chosen books, brought lots of very emotional moments, mostly due to the themes many of these books touch within their pages: from the civil war in Syria all the way to concentration camps. Until the very end of the voting, today’s debate was very suspenseful and eventually brought some great news for Chuck, who’s book ‘Homes’ by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and Winnie Yeung as well as Ziya Tong’s book ‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen both advanced as the final two books to the final round of Canada Reads.

If you have some time on your hands, make sure to check out the following video capturing Day 3 of Canada Reads and see Chuck Comeau from Simple Plan and his fellow panelists debate about the importance of the topics featured in their chosen books. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some new books to put on your “to read” list!

Chuck Comeau becomes one of the debating panelists of Canada Reads 2019!

Ever since 2002, CBC has been broadcasting an annual ‘battle of the books’ under the name Canada Reads. The premise of the program is that 5 panelists each choose one Canadian book and then have to defend it in a series of debates. After each debate, one book is eliminated until only one book remains. This book is then billed as the book that all of Canada should read. The publisher of the winning Canada Reads title then donates a portion of sales proceeds from the winning book to a charitable organization working in the field of literacy. The bump in sales the shortlisted books enjoy each year has come to be known as the “Canada Reads effect” and is one of the biggest boosts a Canadian book can receive.

This year’s list of books featured on Canada Reads is centered on the theme ‘One Book to Move You’ and the panelists have just been announced: Simple Plan’s drummer Chuck Comeau, who’s an avid reader, will be joining the team of panelists of Canada Reads and will be defending the book ‘Homes’ by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and Winnie Yeung. His competing panelists include Yanic Truesdale (actor – Gilmore Girls), Lisa Ray (actress, model), Ziya Tong (TV personality) and Joe Zee (fashion stylist)

On Thursday, Chuck was in Toronto, Canada to launch the start of the Canada Reads competition and to meet the other panelists he will be debating about the chosen books with. Check out some of the pictures taken during this promo event in our gallery:

Chuck discussed his excitement over being involved with Canada Reads on his Instagram and also revealed what the book ‘Homes’, that he’s defending, is about and why everyone should give it a read. Check it out:

“Close your eyes and imagine being a 10 year-old boy in the middle of the civil war in Syria. Car bombs exploding a few blocks away from your school, snipers shooting civilians from the roof of your apartment building, bullets raining down on you as you pray…

This is the life that Abu Bark Al Rahbeeah lived in Syria until he escaped to Canada and “Homes” reads like the private diary of an innocent child stuck in a world of senseless violence.

In this strange moment in our collective history where ignorance, disinformation, racist policies and building walls have somehow become our new normal, this incredible memoir is important and timely. It will shake you to your core, open your eyes to the plight of refugees worldwide and make you feel compassion and empathy for families who are willing to risk everything for a better life. It will make you profoundly grateful that your children don’t have to fall asleep to the sound of machine guns and fighter jets. And it will remind you of what a special place Canada is, for welcoming Bark and his family with open arms.

Please go check out this book – it might just change the way you feel about your own life and the underlying love story between a father and his son will hit you so hard… “

Four live, hour-long debates in front of a Toronto audience are set to take place from March 25th to 28th. One book will be eliminated each day of the competition until the winner is chosen on March 28th. The debates will be broadcast daily on CBC Radio One and CBC-TV, and live streamed online at CBCbooks.ca.

Chuck’s book club: what is Simple Plan’s drummer reading?

Back in July of 2017, Chuck Comeau set up a “book club” on his Instagram, where he regularly discusses books he’s recently read and recommends them to his public, while also taking tips from his fans on which other books he could dive into. This has become a very popular segment on Chuck’s Instagram feed, in which both the drummer and the fans can discuss a slightly different part of human culture than music.

So if you’re currently looking for something interesting to read, come check out his most recent recommendations which also come with Chuck’s own comments about each of the books.

Born To Run – Bruce Springsteen

“I knew this book had gotten rave reviews and I was curious to check it out. It’s a beautifully written, incredibly intimate and honest memoir that chronicles the personal and professional journey of one of music’s most iconic performer. Even if you aren’t a hardcore fan, it’s absolutely riveting. From growing up on the Jersey Shore in a tough and dysfunctional family to forming his first bands, playing stadiums all over the world and firing band members, from divorce details to his battle with depression, The Boss is incredibly forthcoming and his life is fascinating. Must-read.”

The Better Angels Of Our Nature – Steven Pinker

“This was an eye-opening book that altered my perception of the world. The central thesis is that, contrary to what most people believe from the constant news report of murders and terrorism, we actually live in the most peaceful time in human history. The book is an exhaustive history of violence and its place in society and the author argues, with many convincing examples and well-researched statistics, that violence has steadily declined over the last centuries and that our world has never been more civilized. At 736 pages, this is not considered “light beach material” but I found it to be a profoundly encouraging and enlightening read.”

Red Notice – Bill Browder

“Bill Browder is a financier who made a fortune investing in undervalued companies in post-communism Russia. His career and life take a turn for the worst when the Russian government and the oligarchs it protects accuse him of a multi-million tax fraud he did not commit. He’s forced to leave the country and one of his lawyer, Sergei Magnistsky, is arrested and beaten to death in a Siberian jail. Browder gives up his hedge fund and begins a crusade for justice for his friend, becoming an unlikely human rights hero and Vladimir Putin’s sworn enemy. It’s a gripping look into the horror of state corruption and an inspiring and heartbreaking tale of courage and standing up for what’s right. I highly recommend it.”

5 years since the release of Simple Plan: The Official Story

Exactly five years ago on this day, November 22nd 2012, Simple Plan released the English version of their first official biography, entitled Simple Plan: The Official Story. The book, originally talked about as the “photo book” features over 300 pages dedicated to the history of Simple Plan from their early begginings in other bands all the way up to the release and the subsequent tour with their fourth record, Get Your Heart On! Penned by Kathleen Lavoie, the biography has been released in two languages: English and French with 10% of the profits going to the Simple Plan Foundation.

Besides the history, fans were also able to find some never-seen-before photos in this book, alongside pictures and scans of various memorabilia, such as early setlists, letters to labels from Chuck (pretending to be the band’s manager in order to help the band get signed) and also interviews the members of the band and various people that have helped them get where they are over the years.

If you’d like to learn more about the process of creating this special biography, check out our section Simple Plan: The Official Story. And if you still don’t have the book and would like to get some insight into what you can expect from it – without spoilers – here is the SimplePlan.cz review of the book!
