The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently got all the medias’ attention and the attention of all the canadian citizens, due to their decision to allow one of the greatest canadian internet providers, Bell Canada, to pass “usage-based billing” onto both their wholesale and retail customers.

That means independent service providers, who rent online space from Bell, are essentially forced to cap the services they offer. As well, any consumers who use more than the data they’re allocated may have to reach deeper into their pockets and shell out cash for every extra GB. Among the users who would be harmed the most by this decision are students, who use the Internet to download music, stream videos, using Skype etc.

THe CRTC’s decision resulted in a huge wave of disagreement among the citizens of Canada: the server OpenMedia.ca even started an online petition “Stop The Meter” against the CRTC decision, and it has already reached 300 000 signatures. Apart from ordinary people, who’ve signed this petition, there are many members of the city councils among the signatories, and according to The Brunswickan the band Simple Plan is among them as well.
