As a part of their return to Europe in the summer, Simple Plan will also make a stop at Download Festival, one of UK’s most popular festivals, on June 10th [more info about this event can be found here].
So in preparation for this big event, where Simple Plan will be in fact headlining the new Avalanche stage (alongside Sleeping With Sirens), Download festival interviewed Seb Lefebvre from SP about his band’s new album and their plans for the festival season.

YOUR FIFTH ALBUM, ‘TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM’, WAS RELEASED IN THE BEGINNING OF 2016. IS THERE ONE SONG THAT RESONATES WITH YOU THE MOST?
I can really identify with ‘Singing in the Rain’. It speaks about how the world is not always a beautiful place but we have to carry on and see the good. It can be about the social climate these days with everything going on around the planet.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR SETLISTS?
With 5 albums, we try to turn the set into a Simple Plan greatest hits. We pick songs from every album and we want our fans to sing from top to bottom. A lot of crowd favourites, some new, some old. We play a lot of the uptempo songs. It’s to have everyone jumping and dancing with us.
THE ALBUM ALSO FEATURES CAMEOS BY MEMBERS OF ALL TIME LOW, PIERCE THE VEIL AND MORE, HOW DID THOSE COME ABOUT?
That was for the ‘BOOM’ video. We were playing Warped Tour and we had all these friends on the tour, old and new. We wanted to release a song that was gonna guide the sound of the album. When we were shooting the video, we asked a bunch of bands to come take part in it.
YOU HAVE A FEW TRACKS ABOUT HEARTBREAK ON THE ALBUM. WHAT COMPELS YOU TO WRITE ABOUT THAT NOW YOU’RE IN A HAPPY RELATIONSHIP?
Heartbreak can come from work relationships and friendships too. Some of the deeper songs on the most recent album can have deeper meanings like that. It seems that it’s always very easy to go back to those feelings when writing music. Music can be like therapy. As you grow, you see old relationships differently and it’s ok for us to revisit them. 5 years ago we would have said “I want you back” but now we say “good riddance”
YOU WORKED WITH DAVID HASSELHOFF FOR THE BAYWATCH-INSPIRED VIDEO FOR, ‘I DON’T WANNA GO TO BED’. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT?
Turn out he’s in on the joke! We had this idea for a video where we’re characters in the iconic TV show ‘Baywatch’, but when you do that, you need the rights. So we had to reach out and explain it to his people and they liked the idea and the band! We pushed our luck and asked him to be in it and he said yes. We shot him at his house… that’s his actual house in the video. Crazy!
YOUR DEBUT ALBUM, ‘NO PADS, NO HELMETS…JUST BALLS’ IS COMING UP TO 15 YEARS OLD! WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO STILL BE PLAYING THOSE SONGS TO A NEW AUDIENCE?
It’s amazing. A lot of fans are seeing us for the first time in their late 20s, they were too young to come to shows before. That album really marked an era for us, it’s really good to still be playing the songs and to relive all those emotions over again.
YOU’RE HEADLINING THE BRAND NEW AVALANCHE STAGE AT DOWNLOAD 2017, HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR BIG FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES LIKE THAT?
We give it all we’ve got! I think Download calls for a lot of our harder hitting and high energy songs, so you can expect some of that in the setlist. We love festivals on the other side of the pond, you sure have some great music fans over there.
HOW DOES PERFORMING AT FESTIVALS DIFFER FROM SMALLER SHOWS?
When you headline your own small show, you know it’s all your hardcore fans that come out to see you. When you play a festival, the fans show up but there’s also a few curious people out there. We make it a mission to convince them to come see us play next time we’re in town.
IF YOU COULD PICK 3 OTHER PERFORMERS ON THE DOWNLOAD 2017 LINE UP TO COLLABORATE WITH, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Biffy Clyro, Sum 41, AFI, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil… All great bands, would be great to sing or tour together.
WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR IN 2017?
A lot more touring on our part! Stay tuned.
