‘Welcome To My Life’ to be featured in a comedic student musical: proceeds to benefit LGBT charity

The ‘Unity for Action’ student club, based at the University of Ottawa, is currently in the midst of preparing its annual musical, through which the students aim to gather funds to support the LGBT Youth Line, a charity that offers counselling, advice, and an outreach hotline for young LGBT individuals.

Every year, the student club chooses a social justice topic, which they tackle within their musical’s story. The 7th edition of Unity for Action’s musical is going to revolve around materialism, which according to the press release “allows the group to be funnier than they could have been (in previous musicals) with more personal topics like domestic abuse.”

The musical, entitled “A Year In The Life” will tell the story about a rich and popular, yet miserable and ungrateful woman swaps her live with a regular girl, who desires fame and fortune. In time however, the regular girl discovers that fame and money doesn’t always equal happiness and at the same time the celebrity learns the importance of being kind and appreciative of everything that’s coming her way.

Since the students do not write their own songs, they opted for taking popular songs that fit the subject of the play and decided to use them to help narrate the musical’s story. Among the songs featured in this musical, music fans will be able to spot for instance Gwen Stefani’s ‘Rich Girl’ or Simple Plan’s ‘Welcome To My Life’.

“A Year In The Life” will be premiering on March 10th and three performances in total will be delivered at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. Find out more about this musical on its Facebook event page.

EXCLUSIVE: Song ‘California’ on Story Untold’s new album originally written by Simple Plan

Story Untold, a young pop-punk band from Canada, has been engraved into the minds of Simple Plan fans for a while now due to their close ties with the members of Simple Plan. Many of you will recognize Janick Thibault, Story Untold’s lead singer, who’s made it big on YouTube thanks to his covers of various pop-punk songs, including some by Simple Plan.

This has eventually led him to open for Simple Plan with his previous band called Amasic and over the years a friendship between him and Simple Plan has flourished. Janick has even co-written a number of songs with the members of Simple Plan for Story Untold’s first official, self-titled, EP.

On February 2nd Story Untold released their debut full-length album called ‘Waves’ and thanks to our reader Conner we found out that the album actually features one song originally written by Simple Plan. This song is called ‘California’ and according to the credits, it has been written by Chuck Comeau, Pierre Bouvier, John Feldmann and Nick Furlong (RAS). If we go back, these four song-writers got together back in November 2014 to do some song-writing for Simple Plan’s then-upcoming album (later becoming ‘Taking One For The Team’), so it is fairly clear to say that this song was written during some of those song-writing sessions.

Check out ‘California’ in full below:

Surely however you still must be wondering how Story Untold got ahold of this song in the first place. That’s why SimplePlan.cz reached out to Janick Thibault himself to give us a little background about this song and this is what he had to say about ‘California’ (thanks, Janick!):

“There is a lot of mature and dark songs on the album but we are all big fans of classic happy pop punk songs. This song stands out a bit from the other songs we have on the album but at the same time I think it’s very fun to listen to and to play live. It basically talks about someone who’s had enough and just want to throw everything away and move to California. It was actually written by Pierre and Chuck from Simple Plan. Back then, I basically emailed Chuck because I wanted to know if he had someone in mind that would and could help me write songs because I wanted to improve my songwriting. And just like that he sent me this song that they recorded with producer John Feldman. It didn’t really fit with the vibe of their latest album so they decided to give it to us and I thank them for that! I think every blink-182 or Good Charlotte fan is going to like it.”

Props from the filming of Singing In The Rain video up for auction on Ebay

Our colleagues over at SPB made a curious discovery: a very interesting bunch of objects recently appeared on Ebay, which may be a great addition to any Simple Plan collection – that is, if you’re willing to pay for it!

An unknown member of the crew involved in the making of the music video for ‘Singing In The Rain’ (filmed in April 2016) got ahold of two pieces of props from the filming: two pieces of fake vinyl records for ‘Singing In The Rain’ made exclusively for the purposes of this video, which have also been used multiple times in the actual music video [e.g. check out mark 1:46 in the music video], as is now offering them in an auction on Ebay.

The bidding for the records started at $100 and as of writing this article, there have not been any bids made to purchase these two items. If you’re interested in purchasing this piece of Simple Plan memorabilia, check out the auction site here.

In the end however, Carmelo did not manage to go through to the next round. You can judge his performance of his Simple Plan cover yourself on the video below:
