Slam Dunk Festival 2019 recap: Simple Plan performed in Leeds and Hatfield

Tens of thousands of people from all over the world gathered in the English countryside in Leeds on Saturday and in Hatfield on Sunday to attend this year’s edition of the Slam Dunk Festival.

The 2019 line-up was a dream-come-true to many fans of various music genres – whether it was for NOFX, Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, Plain White T’s, Hellogoodbye, Lights, Waterparks, Neck Deep, All Time Low or Simple Plan, each stage always brought in thousands of people, who got to watch their favorite acts live and even discover some new ones.

As you already know, Slam Dunk Festival in Leeds and Hatfield were Simple Plan’s only two appearances in Europe this summer and the guys were really excited to be back in the United Kingdom to deliver two great performances to the Slam Dunk festival attendees.

Given that this was a festival, Simple Plan’s set was of course much shorter than during their usual headlining shows. And what did it look like, you ask? The guys played the following songs at both dates of the festival:

1. I’d Do Anything
2. Shut Up!
3. Jump
4. Jet Lag
5. Addicted
6. Boom
7. Summer Paradise
8. Welcome To My Life
9. I’m Just A Kid
10. Perfect

As always, during I’m Just A Kid, Chuck and Pierre switched places and while Pierre was behind the drums, Chuck went crowdsurfing amongst the fans. During Summer Paradise, some Slam Dunk attendees were able to score the Simple Plan beach balls that SP alongside some of their on-stage guests, including members of NOFX, kicked into the crowd. These beach balls later also impressed the members of Plain White T’s, who joked during their own set in Hatfield that they need to get some beach balls too.

Now, let’s have a look at what the shows looked like! Check out the first photos from the Slam Dunk shows in Leeds and Hatfield in our gallery:

SimplePlan.cz had the opportunity to attend the Hatfield version of Slam Dunk on Sunday, so below you can enjoy three videos we filmed for you there. Check out Simple Plan performing ‘Shut Up!’, ‘Summer Paradise’ and ‘Welcome To My Life’ live at Slam Dunk South – from a little different perspective:

Of course, being at this festival also meant that the guys from Simple Plan got to hang out with both some of their friends from other bands (such as All Time Low – by the way, Jack Barakat could not miss watching SP live, so he watched a part of this set sitting down side-stage) and also their own fans – who got to hang out with them at the signing sessions both in Leeds and in Hatfield. When it came to the signing sessions, the guys only had about an hour to sign to the huge line of people who showed up just to meet them. But it wouldn’t be Simple Plan if they didn’t try to do their best to make everyone happy, so after another band already had to take over the singing tent, they moved the signing line to the side and took pictures with the rest of the fans, who were dying to meet them. And we applaud them for it!

Below, you can check out links to albums from Leeds (left) and Hatfield (right), where we gathered some pictures from the signing sessions (including some of our own from Hatfield :)) and also some backstage photos the guys have already published online. Have a look:

And finally, we’d like to send a big thanks to SP for always being so cool with us and also to all the fans we got to meet at the show in Hatfield! Hope you enjoy your SimplePlan.cz pins :)

Watch Patrick Langlois sing Summer Paradise with Sebastien on guitar live on radio

This morning on the show ‘On est tous debout’ on Montreal’s Rouge 107.3 radio was quite a funny one. Patrick Langlois, who is one of the hosts of this program, exchanged his usual spoken voice for a singing voice and alongside his Man Of The Hour co-host, Simple Plan’s Sebastien Lefebvre, performed Simple Plan’s 2012 hit single ‘Summer Paradise’.

For those of you who may be newer to Simple Plan and are wondering who Patrick is… Patrick Langlois is definitely not a singer. Until 2008, Pat used to be Simple Plan’s merch guy, photographer, videographer and tour manager back in the early days of the band and you can even find him in the background of many Simple Plan music videos from the early 2000s. But most of all, even after all these years he’s still one of the dearest friends of the guys in the band. He’s since moved on to do bigger things and is now a full time radio & sometimes also TV host and a pretty well-known personality in Montreal.

Let’s have a look at how well Patrick did with ‘Summer Paradise’ on the video below:

Chuck places second in Canada Reads 2019 as an advocate for the book ‘Homes’

Only one single vote decided the fate of this year’s edition of the Canada Reads battle of the books, in which in a series of discussions, one books is eventually named the book that all of Canada should read and some of its profits are then forwarded to charities involved in the literary field. It was a duel between two panelists – Ziya Tong, who advocated for ‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen, which delved into his own story as an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor, and Chuck Comeau, who’s chosen book was ‘Homes’ by a Syrian refugee in Canada Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and his teacher Winnie Yeung, who helped him tell the story of his family’s escape from the civil war torn country.

The final debate took place yesterday in Toronto, Canada and it was a very hard-fought battle from all sides. Luckily, during the debates, both remaining panelists once again received some words of encouragement from some important people – for Chuck it was first Hafedh Al Rabeeah, the father of Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, who thanked Chuck for taking an interest in his son’s book and helping him in this way and the second voice message for Chuck was then left by his own wife Jacqueline and his son London, who wished him all the best in his debating efforts. If you want to hear these messages, you can head over to mark 30:21 of the video below.

In the end, after all panelists have cast their votes and after the first two votes of the already eliminated panelists went to each of the remaining advocates, it was up to Yanic Truesdale to cast the final, deciding vote. Unfortunately for Chuck, Yanic decided to change his mind in the end, stating that while he came to the finale, thinking he would be voting for Homes to win, the final words of Ziya Tong, in which expressed her wish for people to read her chosen book because generation of people like Max Eisen will not be with us much longer and this is own of the last true accounts of Holocaust we will ever be able to read, made him vote differently – against ‘Homes’..

‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen, advocated by Ziya Tong, has then become the winner of Canada Reads 2019.

Check out the full recording of the final debate below:

After Chuck’s loss, he headed over to Twitter to express his thoughts about the competition and uged people to still make sure to pick up ‘Homes’ in their bookshop to help spread the word about acceptance of the Muslim culture in our society:

“Very disappointed and crushed I couldn’t get the job done on Canada Reads and secure a victory for my incredible book ‘Homes’. I’m sorry to everyone who loved the book so passionately even more importantly, to the authors, Winnie and Bakr, and their families. I tried my best. I urge everyone to pick up this book and discover this amazing story of hope, love, courage and resilience. My wish is that despite our loss today, it keeps on reaching more people and keeps on opening people’s minds and hearts. This is the book we need right now. Thank you to my fellow panelists Ziya Tong, Joe Zee, Lisa Ray and Yanic Truesdale for an incredible week and a life-changing experience. Thank you to Ali Hassan and the entire CBC Books team as well. You were all phenomenal.”

– Chuck Comeau –

Chuck aces Day 3 of Canada Reads’ debates and advances to this battle of books’ finale!

Day 3 of Canada Reads where the panelists of the three remaining books kept relentlessly advocating for their chosen books, brought lots of very emotional moments, mostly due to the themes many of these books touch within their pages: from the civil war in Syria all the way to concentration camps. Until the very end of the voting, today’s debate was very suspenseful and eventually brought some great news for Chuck, who’s book ‘Homes’ by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah and Winnie Yeung as well as Ziya Tong’s book ‘By Chance Alone’ by Max Eisen both advanced as the final two books to the final round of Canada Reads.

If you have some time on your hands, make sure to check out the following video capturing Day 3 of Canada Reads and see Chuck Comeau from Simple Plan and his fellow panelists debate about the importance of the topics featured in their chosen books. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some new books to put on your “to read” list!
