Last night, Simple Plan kicked off the very first show of their European Taking One For The Team tour in Madrid, Spain. But of course, it wouldn’t be a good start of the tour if something didn’t go according to plan – in the morning of the show, the opening bands The Bottom Line and Ghost Town got into a car accident with their tourbus somewhere in the south of France but luckily nobody got hurt. The situation however caused lots of delays through-out the day and the bands unfortunately didn’t make it to Madrid on time for the show. The local band Everlyn filled their spot instead. The Bottom Line however didn’t want to disappoint the fans entirely and after the show set up a spontaneous acoustic session outside of Palacio Vistalegre (the venue in Madrid), where they performed a couple of Simple Plan songs. How sweet!
When it comes to Simple Plan, as expected, the band had a lot of special surprises in store for the fans who came to see them. As you will be able to tell from the pictures, the guys have a gorgeous new sport-themed backdrop – but that is not all that has changed. Check out the setlist for Madrid and let’s talk about it a bit more below:

Simple Plan switched their long-time opening song “Shut Up” for the new “Opinion Overload” which is just as hard-hitting and kicks the show off perfectly. Besides that, the band played other songs from the new album such as ‘Farewell’, ‘Boom’ and ‘Nostalgic’. Their plan was to also perform ‘I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed’ and ‘Kiss Me Like Nobody’s Watching’ however due to technical issues they weren’t able to on this particular show. Check out one of the first videos of ‘Farewell’ live below:
Besides the new songs, the band also played a good mix of their old tracks – even with some surprises – for example, Simple Plan performed ‘Perfect World’, which has been a rarity for the past few years and also for the first time in forever played the regular (non-acoustic) version of ‘Crazy’. Also, ‘This Song Saved My Life’ has apparently been performed acoustically, which also hasn’t happened before during regular live shows.
The guys kept the ‘I Gotta Feeling’ snippet within ‘Jump’ and it turns out the long-awaited new party medley will be just one cover song on this tour and it is a cover of ‘Uptown Funk’, originally by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. Check it out below:
Regarding the setlist, it has been mentioned in many interviews in the past that Simple Plan want to change up the setlist throughout this tour way more often than they have done before and they would like to rotate 7-8 songs from TOFTT. So if you don’t see your favorite on the setlist, just wait for the other shows!
