Interview: Phil Jolicoeur about the upcoming Reset reunion

In just a month, a very long-awaited reunion will take place in Canada: as announced earlier this year, the original line-up of Reset will perform at the Amnesia Rockfest festival with Chuck Comeau, Pierre Bouvier, Phil Jolicoeur and perhaps also Jean Sebastien “JS” Bolieu who started the band in 1993 when still in high school. As time went on some of the members left the band – first Chuck, later Pierre and then also JS [read more about Simple Plan’s relation to the history of Reset here]. The only remaining band ember from the original line-up, Phil Jolicoeur, still continues playing in this band even today.

And it was Phil who the Brazilian website Mixme.com.br decided to interview in regards to the upcoming Reset reunion. Below you can check out the English translation of this interview:

Mixme: You have already had a few reunions with the original line-up, although they were a couple years apart. As the current leader of Reset, why do you enjoy doing things like this sometimes?
Phil: Yeah, it’s been five years since the last gig with the original line-up. It’s always something special to do a show like this. They are the guys I started my career in music with twenty years ago. It’s not like any other show, it is rare and unique. And Pierre and Chuck too. It’s always fun to celebrate events and presentations that started in our career. We haven’t had the chance to talk much or see each other because we took different paths. It will be a chance for us all to join these disparate lives and play together again.

Mixme: And JS? He is the only member from the original line-up who did not follow the music path. At the last meet-up, it’s been more than ten years since he performed. Will he play with you at this festival?
Phil: JS approved our participation on the festival. I do not know if he played an instrument since the last meeting, but one thing I can say, he will need to practice if he wants to share the stage with me, Pierre and Chuck.

Mixme: How did the invitation for this show come about?
Phil: The current line-up of Reset had already played the Rockfest in 2009, when the festival was not so big yet. Today it’s probably the biggest rock festival in North America. The promoter was already trying to reunite the original members for a while. He got in touch with me and Chuck to see if it was possible. Last year, it wasn’t, but this year we made it work. And I know that every fan will be pleased to see Reset, and more surprises that are to come.

Mixme: You have all chosen different paths in music – what are the greatest difficulties and the greatest challenges? Somebody had previously said Pierre sounded too melodic at the last Reset show…
Phil: Pierre is a great singer. He progressed on his vocals, as I have on the guitar. If he found other melodies in his voice, I’m sure he’ll take it as a compliment, since he is going to be singing songs we wrote twenty years ago. On the challenges… Every show is a challenge. The bigger the show, the bigger the challenge.

Mixme: After so long, you have to rehearse a lot together so that you don’t mess it up on stage, don’t you?
Phil: We are professionals with a talented team supporting us. We have an entire schedule to follow, as it was at the first meeting. We have two practices together to prepare a setlist with songs from our first two albums, that we have recorded together: “No Worries” and “No Limits”. We will have between half an hour and forty five minutes on stage, so I will also propose that we try to play Reset’s newest single. But we have not started rehearsing yet, that is set for a week before the show.

Mixme: And what about the present members of Reset? Do they take it cool?
Phil: Yes, all of them agreed, it was unanimous. And we will have a great surprise for them, which they are not aware of yet.

Mixme: Based on the last show, what do you expect for this one?
Phil: I’m just expecting the most amazing show that Reset ever played.

Mixme: You’re playing with a lot of great bands. Will you get to watch some other shows as a fan?
Phil: Dave Mustaine and Megadeth is my favorite band at the festival this year. Moreover, the lineup is amazing. I want to watch all these bands: Weezer, Billy Talent, Goldfinger, Cannibal Corpse. And let’s not forget the bands with whom we have shared the stage before: Lagwagon, Blink-182, NOFX, Strung Out, Face to Face, MXPX, GOB and the list goes on…

New picture of Chuck and Pierre from “Reset” era

With the announcement of Reset reuniting their original line-up for one night only at Amnesia Rockfest in June, a brand new picture of the original line-up from the mid-90s has surfaced online. On the picture you can see (from left to right) Jean-Sébastien Boileau (bass), Pierre Bouvier (vocals), Chuck Comeau (drums) and Philippe Jolicoeur (guitars/vocals) in their teenage years:

Reset’s original line-up to reunite for Amnesia Rockfest!

On June 20th and 21st, the city of Montebello, QC, in Canada will be hosting the 9th edition of Amnesia Rockfest, which is the largest rock festival in Canada – featuring more than 150 bands on a number of stages.

This year’s line-up is very interesting for fans of all rock-related genres – the headliners of the first night will be Blink-182 and on second night, the fans will get to enjoy Mötley Crüe.

Besides other big acts that will be performing on Amnesia Rockfest (Billy Talent, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, MXPX – just to name a few), the festival will also be a place of bands’ reunions – and for the Simple Plan fans that is most importantly the band Reset, which will reunite for one night only with its original line-up. Both Chuck and Pierre will be there to rock some of their old songs along with Phil Jolicoeur, who’s the only person from the original line-up who is currently still in the band.

Reset was the starting band of Pierre Bouvier and Chuck Comeau from Simple Plan, who were among the original members, and after Pierre’s (and before that also Chuck’s) departure, also a band that David Desrosiers briefly joined as a vocalist, replacing Pierre.

The last time Reset reunited was in 2009 at the 10 year anniversary of the 123 Punk programme. You can check out a few pictures from that show here.

Exclusive scans of “No Limits” album by Reset

If you’re familiar with the history of Simple Plan, then you definitely know that before the formation of the five-piece “Simple Plan” in between 1999 and 2000, Pierre and Chuck started in a completely different project – in a band called Reset. While Pierre and Chuck were in Reset, the band released two albums: “No Worries” in 1997 and “No Limits” in 1999. “No Limits” has been released after Chuck has left Reset after not being able to stand the endless fights with Pierre anymore, and Pierre even wrote a very bittersweet song called “Friend” about it, that is also featured in “No Limits”.

Now you can have an exclusive look at the scans from the complete booklet of this record. For instance, it’s very interesting to see that the same page that features the lyrics to “Friend”, also has a “special thanks to Chuck Comeau for creative input” note.

Flashback: Chuck’s journalism career

Many many years ago, when he was still in Reset with Pierre, apart from drumming, Chuck started in the music industry with writing for a music magazine. In April 1996 he even got the opportunity to interview a member of one of his favourite bands – Bad Religion.

At that time he was only 16 years old – and I think even for his early age, he nailed the interview pretty well – he even managed to show Bad Religion one of his tracks (Go Away by Reset) and get an evaluation.

Today, Patrick Langlois posted the video of this never-seen-before interview (which also includes an interview with Chuck) on Twitter with a note that the first time he saw it, he knew he wanted to work for MusiquePlus (which he eventually made happen :)):
