Meaning of the song

“Now that all of us have kids, the idea of splitting up with your spouse and having to make decisions in your life that will affect your kids has sort of taken a whole new meaning. Luckily for me, and Chuck as well, we came from families that are still together, but we wanted to write about divorce and get as real and raw as possible. When a couple is going through divorce, and they’re worried about the impact on their children, what do they do? They start saying, ‘Well, from now on, you’ll have two Christmases and you get to have two birthday parties!’ And the kid is probably thinking, ‘I don’t want that! I don’t want two bedrooms or two holidays, I just want one!’ So for anyone who’s the product of divorce, or is going through that themselves, I think this song is really going to hit home. It was a hard one to sing.”

Song lyrics

I see the car pull up and I know it’s time
All my bags are packed but it don’t feel right
Say goodbye to mom, say hello to dad
They used to be so close, now they look so mad
In the passenger seat, I wonder what went wrong
Is it all my fault they don’t get along?
Can you turn around, give it one last chance?
Don’t you understand?

I never wanted two houses, two bedrooms, two separate lives
I never wanted two families, two stories, two different sides
Tell me it’ll be okay ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to say
But all I want is to go back to one

Every Christmas Eve, you both play pretend
And I still believe this could be real again
Maybe kiss goodnight like you used to do
Before all the fights, like a dream come true
Now you act like strangers who never call
You took down the pictures off your wall
Caught in the middle again, it doesn’t make any sense
Don’t you understand?

I never wanted two houses, two bedrooms, two separate lives
I never wanted two families, two stories, two different sides
Tell me it’ll be okay ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to say
But all I want is to go back to one
To one

I see the car pull up and I know it’s time
As you tell me it’s gonna be alright
If it’s for the best, then why’s it such a mess?
I don’t understand

I never wanted two houses, two bedrooms, two separate lives
I never wanted two families, two stories, two different sides
Tell me it’ll be okay ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to say
But all I want is to go back to one

Two houses, two bedrooms, two separate lives (Back to one)
Two families, two stories, two different sides
All I want is to go back to one
