6 years since the release of the self-titled album by Simple Plan

Wanna feel old? Today, February 12th, marks the 6th anniversary since the release of Simple Plan’s 3rd studio record – the self-titled (“Simple Plan”) album.

While musically, the band slightly departed from their original pop-punk sound that they’ve established on their first two records, the album still became a success – mostly in Europe, Australia and South America. The band released 3 singles (with accompanying music videos) from this album: firstly “When I’m Gone”, then “Your Love Is A Lie” and lastly “Save You”.

To celebrate this anniversary, let’s remind ourselves of summer of 2007 when the boys recorded this album and Patrick kept us updated with the studio vlogs – back when “group vlogs sucked” :)

PHOTO: New version of rejected self-titled album cover

Back in December 2007, when Simple Plan revealed the album cover for their upcoming – third – self-titled album (2008), the picture provoked a very negative reaction from the fans. After Pierre firstly defended the choice of the picture in his MySpace blog, the band has later on decided to leave it up to the fans to choose the album cover – between that one and the black & white one that has eventually become the one representing the self-titled album we all know.

I recently came across another version of the rejected album cover, that features the band surrounded by flames and a burned-out town, which uses the background from a tiny bit different perspective and mostly uses different effects on the album/band name. Check it out:

5 years since the release of the self-titled album

Today we commemorate the 5th anniversary since the release of Simple Plan’s third studio album – “Simple Plan”. The album came out on February 12th 2008 and featured 11 songs – most notably “When I’m Gone”, “Your Love Is A Lie” and “Save You”. For the band has this album been the tougest to write, as both Chuck and Pierre went through a writer’s block mostly due to family and relationships issues.

After the record was done, the band announced the first single “When I’m Gone” after a viral campaign on MySpace that signalized their return to the scene on October 29th 2007, when the band streamed a live webchat. Soon after that, the band revealed the first version of the album’s cover, which spurred mostly very negative reactions from the fans. And while Pierre at first released a blog on MySpace defending the artwork, a couple days later the band decided to leave it up to the fans to choose which artwork they would like on the cover of Simple Plan’s new record – the choice being between the first not-well received version and a black-and-white picture of the band. Needless to say that the fans chose the black-and-white option.

The closer we were getting to the release date, the band kept releasing more surprises under the SP wheel on SimplePlan.com, which included new lyrics, photos and special videos about each of the songs.

While it wasn’t Simple Plan’s most successful album, it definitely got the band a legion of new fans, who fell in love with the meaningful and emotional lyrics that this album has produced.

Today, February 12th 2012 we commemorate 4 years since the day that Simple Plan’s third studio album – simply called “Simple Plan” was released in 2008 … though it seems like it was just yesterday, right?

Congratulations to the anniversary! :)
