Over a year ago, just in the middle of the pandemic, Pierre Bouvier started working with a talented young singer Beckett McDowell, the son of the actor Malcolm McDowell (Clockwork Orange), who happened to be Pierre’s neighbour.
Pierre produced a full album of songs for Beckett, often co-written by both Pierre and Chuck from Simple Plan. The first song of the album – “Weirdo” came out this month and Beckett recently revealed a little bit more about how his collaboration with Pierre came about and mentioned that the song was in fact originally written as a pop-punk Simple Plan song.
“Weirdo came to be because I’m neighbor with my buddy Pierre Bouvier from Simple Plan and my little brother Finn McDowell golfs with him sometimes and he was like: “Hey, you should check out my brother’s new album!” Cause I’ve written and done an album previously that I’ve never released it. Pierre’s like “Okay, cool!” So he listened to it and he was like “Yeah, that sounds awesome.” So he’s like “Hey, I got this song ‘Weirdo’ for you.” It was a Simple Plan song and it was written by him and Chuck, the drummer, and Nick Bailey, their buddy. And I was like “Oh, this is a great song!” It was very pop-punky and I changed it to kind of a pop song. I mean, we did together, obviously. But like he made it, he changed it from major to minor, and I wrote the bridge and like before you knew it, we were in love! No, before we knew it, we had a cool song in our hands and that’s how Weirdo came to be.”
Thanks to our reader Julia we’ve learned that the British-American rock band As It Is released a brand new single this week called “I Miss 2003”, which the band formed as a love letter to the alternative scene from the early 2000s. In the lyrics, the band hid a number of references to bands from this era, such as Jimmy Eat World, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Good Charlotte or Simple Plan.
Simple Plan in particular are referenced in “I Miss 2003” through their hit song “Welcome To My Life” (featured on the album “Still Not Getting Any”). The verse referencing Simple Plan goes as follows:
I’m in the middle of a crisis Welcome to my life, no I don’t think that I like this I can’t believe I got this jaded (got this jaded) I remember singing to “The Anthem” My friends were the best, wish I knew it when I had them ‘Cause now it’s kind of complicated
Check out what the band’s guitarist Ronnie Ish said about the inspiration for this song:
“Growing up in a small town isn’t easy when you’re different. Bullied for the way you dress, criticized for the things you like, hated on for the music you listen to. Some days were a battle for me getting out of bed to go through the same routine again and again. But there’s something special about a song that makes you feel alive, and has the power to put all the negative shit in the back of your mind. This scene gave me a place to call home and empowered me to be me, unashamedly and unapologetically. If it weren’t for the bands and the songs and the words and the community to get me through all of the shit, I don’t know who I’d be today or if I’d even be at all.
We wrote a love letter to the scene titled ‘I MISS 2003’ to pay homage to all the bands that paved the way for us to say what we want to say, the way we want to say it. IM’03 was the last song we wrote and recorded with ZJ to finalize ‘I WENT TO HELL & BACK’ [coming out 02/04/22] there’s an undeniable energy to it, it feels different but the scene’s DNA that runs through all our veins makes it feel all the same. Load up the car with all your friends and turn this shit up to ten. Hope it makes you feel something.”

With Simple Plan’s new single “The Antidote” picking up hype on playlists all around the world, the band decided to reveal a little bit more from the making of this song by releasing a video footage from the behind the scenes of recording this song in the studio in California back in the summer of 2019.
In just a couple hours, Simple Plan’s brand new single “The Antidote” will premiere online and in the anticipation of this big event, Simple Plan have been hyping up their fans with a bunch of new content.
First, the band published a video on their Instagram showing the behind the scenes of what looks like could be the promotional photoshoot for the new album, which took place at the end of August, when the guys finally got toegether again after a long time in California. Check it out below:
And of course it’s not just the new song and the album that the guys are hyping up now – it’s also the upcoming tour with The Offspring. And speaking of that, Pierre and Chuck actually got together with Noodles and Dexter from The Offspring and in order for them to be even allowed into Canada, the members of Simple Plan decided to give The Offspring a little bit of schooling – the Canadian way. Check out the funny video below:
And finally, given how many fans still keep asking Simple Plan about David Desrosiers, who left the band mid-2020 after some allegations of sexual misconduct came to light, the band decided to address this on their social media as well once more. See their statement below:
“A lot of you are asking about David. As stated in his most recent Instagram post, David has stepped away from the band as of the summer of 2020 and continues to focus on working on himself. We respect his decision and wish him the best in this ongoing process.
Thanks to the recent TikTok live session with Simple Plan and Papa Roach, we were already able to hear a sneak peek of the live version of the brand new Simple Plan song “The Antidote”.
Now, the full song is coming out next week on November 5th, but until then you can enjoy at least a preview of the studio version of “The Antidote” track thanks to the new TikTok video that Pierre uploaded on Simple Plan’s TikTok channel.
