Kevin Lyman on 5SOS bringing recognition to Simple Plan

On September 27th, Kevin Lyman, the man behind the most popular festival tour in the United States – Warped Tour – held a class on CreativeLive.com called “The Music Biz: Bands, Brands, Managers, and Tours. During the livestream, he had Jake Round (founder of Pure Noise Records) on Skype and together they were discussing the new wave of pop punk and how bands like 5 Seconds To Summer were bringing recognition to older pop punk bands like Simple Plan as Simple Plan did to bands like Blink 182. In particular, Lyman meant the recent news of the upcoming collaboration between Simple Plan and 5 Seconds Of Summer, which have been (indirectly) confirmed by both bands.

Thanks to Misty Lake who listened in and was able to do a transcript of what Kevin Lyman said regarding Simple Plan, you can now read the direct quote below:

“I think with 5 Seconds Of Summer a lot of people in traditional punk rock would have been like and you hear it, this whole backlash to it. And any time something like that happens it usually benefits the history of where it came from. And I got home from summer and you know, I saw 5 Seconds Of Summer open for One Direction 2 years ago. And I just watched that moment in time when girls they were watching guys play guitars for the first time and they were wearing Green Day shirts and they were out there. And then there was this whole talk about them being on the cover of AP, what was that and I go yeah they’re on the cover and they open that magazine and got turned on to all these bands we worked with around Warped Tour. What’s wrong with that? And those bands love that music. Now you’re right, bands like Simple Plan and New Found Glory, they’re getting recognition to where that’s what they listen to when they were really young.”

After many past indications that there might be some sort of a collaboration between Simple Plan and 5 Seconds Of Summer, the news seem to be even more true now that Pierre and Chuck attended the One Direction and 5 Seconds Of Summer concert in Pasadena, California yesterday, where they also met the boys from 5SOS. Kiehl’s Twitter chat: Simple Plan confirm collaboration with 5SOS is in works

On Tuesday evening, all the members of Simple Plan who reside in Montreal – Jeff, Sebastien and David – took part in the launch of the charity program Kiehl’s Rocks For Kids at the Kiehl’s store in Montreal, Canada. This program includes the following four initiatives:

limited edition of the Ultra Facial Cream: this product will be available in all the Kiehl’s stores in Canada with 100% net profit going to the Simple Plan Foundation.
for every transaction made at Kiehl’s between September 12th and 14th 2014, Kiehl’s will donate $1 to the Simple Plan Foundation.
acoustic performance of Simple Plan: the band will perform a special acoustic concert in Toronto, Canada on September 19th. The tickets will be given away for free at Toronto Kiehl’s stores starting September 13th and also through a contest on Breakfast Television.
live-stream of the concert: the show will be streamed online for all the fans, who donate $1 per view for the Simple Plan Foundation.

The company’s goal is to raise $40 000 for the Simple Plan Foundation through these initiatives.

During the evening at the Kiehl’s store, the members of Simple Plan gave out a couple of interviews to the media (which should be available soon – stay tuned!) and after that sat down with a laptop to answer the fans’ questions that have been sent in in advance using special hashtags on Twitter. You can check out all the fan questions and answers at @kiehlscanada. One answer that stood out was the band’s indirect confirmation of the rumor that there is indeed something coming up between Simple Plan and the Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer in the future. See the tweet below:

The boys also helped the local Kiehl’s team with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – which you can see on a video here. And finally: in the gallery you can now check out the first pictures of David, Jeff and Sebastien from last night’s appearance at the Kiehl’s store:

5 Seconds Of Summer might work with Simple Plan in the future

In the latest interview for Alter The Press, Ashton Irwin from the Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer discussed the band’s past collaborations with other artists such as Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low or Joel and Benji Madden and also their plans on future possible help from some artists with 5SOS’s next album. Interestingly enough, Ashton mentioned in a part of the interview that Simple Plan is one of the bands they’d like to work with.

Check out the excerpt of the interview mentioning Simple Plan below:

ATP: Have you already thought about who you would like to write with on your next album?

Ashton Irwin (5SOS): “I’m not sure. We’d like to write a lot of it ourselves this time but work with the same people and maybe one or two new people. We heard from Simple Plan the other day actually when we were in Canada. We would like to work with bands like that who are really cool.”
