Chuck and Patrick celebrate Enema Of The State’s (blink-182) 20th anniversary

One of the most influential and impactful pop-punk albums of all time, Blink 182’s ‘Enema Of The State’ celebrated 20 years since its release yesterday. It’s of course a known fact that Blink 182 were (and still are) one of the biggest influences on Simple Plan in their early years and due to the fact that since Reset, Chuck and Mark Hoppus knew each other, Simple Plan had Mark Hoppus fall in love with one of their songs (I’d Do Anything) even before it came their debut album was released. That eventually also led to him accepting Simple Plan’s offer to sing on the track.

Blink’s impact on Simple Plan has been massive, so it’s no surprise that yesterday right on the 20th anniversary of ‘Enema Of The State’, Patrick Langlois (Simple Plan’s former tour manager, merch guy and photographer) dug out a couple of 20-year-old photos from May 1999, when him and Chuck got to hang out with Mark Hoppus, after which he actually gave them an advance copy of ‘Enema Of The State’ to listen to two whole weeks before it officially came out.

blink-182’s “Enema of the state” turns 20 today!

The importance this record holds in my life cannot be overstated. It is without a doubt the album I have listened to the most. I know it by heart front to back: every word, every drum fill, every melody.

I also happen to have been there when the band chose to have their album release party in Montreal. Chuck and I had ran into Mark, Tom and Travis at a college show in Albany a few weeks earlier, so when they came in town to record a live show for MusiquePlus and then hold an autograph session at Foufounes Électriques, they invited us both to come along.

I was 18 years old, had loved the band since day one (I still have a “blink” Cheshire Cat CD, before the 182) and here I was being invited to join the band at dinner. I still remember my now friend Jonathan Bergeron’s face from Universal when he realized everyone that was coming and who he had to pay for dinner 🤣

The date was May 19th 1999 and Mark gave Chuck an advance copy of Enema so by June 1st we already knew it by heart.

I will die saying that this is my favorite album. Happy birthday EOTS!

This record came out 20 years ago today and it completely changed my life. Thank you, Mark, Tom and Travis. This photo was taken on May 19th 1999, the night I actually heard the album for the 1st time. Mark gave me an advance copy and I raced home to listen to it. I knew instantly that my world had forever changed. Thank you, Mark, Tom and Travis for the incredible music and for always being so kind and generous to me and Simple Plan. Forever grateful. And Enema Of The State is still my favorite album of all time!

Simple Plan to join Blink-182 and Neck Deep on their tour for one night in Toronto!

This summer, Toronto will witness a truly unforgettable pop-punk night! On July 7th, three of some of the most notorious pop-punk acts will join their forces and perform together at the Budweiser Stage: Blink-182, Simple Plan and Neck Deep.

This Toronto gig is a part of the just-announced North-American Blink-182 & Lil Wayne (who will not be present in Toronto, though) tour with Neck Deep. Simple Plan will only be taking part in the show in Toronto, ON, Canada, as the second opening band. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 10th.

Patrick shares his insight into SP history: explains how Mark Hoppus (blink-182) wanted SP to be called ‘One-legged duck’

On this week’s Man Of The Hour show, Patrick and Sebastien delved into the history of Simple Plan by Patrick pulling out a story from the very very early days of Simple Plan, a story that has been a legend for quite a while. Yes, the ‘One-legged duck’ story.

Now, you may recall the legend that Mark Hoppus from blink-182 once tried to convince Simple Plan to choose the name ‘One-legged duck’ and in fact we even had Chuck, Pierre and Seb confirm this ‘legend’ to be true in our 2015 SimplePlan.cz interview from Antwerp [rewatch it here!]. But how exactly did this attempt at baptizing the band this somewhat extraordinary name come about? That’s where Patrick’s story comes in.

By the way, during the course of the story, you’ll see Patrick using mostly the name ‘Three-legged duck’ since he himself wasn’t sure if the duck was to be one or three-legged, but since the legend so far has exclusively been about ‘One-legged duck’, we’re gonna stick with that.

If you haven’t listened to the latest Man Of The Hour episode, you can do so below as well as you can read the story of how Simple Plan got almost named ‘One-legged duck’, as told by Patrick Langlois:

Patrick: “When I was 19 years old, I used to always go see blink-182 shows as long as they were in like a 6-hour radius from Montreal. The legend goes… It’s not a legend, it’s an actual true story.. I went to see blink-182 in Albany and my buddy Chuck tagged along. We went to the show in Albany, it was like a college show and so, there weren’t like many people there and we ended up backstage, hanging out the boys from blink-182 with Mark, with Tom and with Travis. And Chuck had his like one claim to “fame” to Mark that his old band Reset had played shows with blink-182. So he was like ‘Hey, I don’t know if you remember me..’ And that’s kind of [how] we get backstage, we end up chilling with Mark, who’s got nothing better to do and through that forms this like tiny little friendship between Simple Plan and blink-182.

Now fast-forward to a year later, blink-182 are playing every single day of the Warped Tour, Enema Of The State has just dropped in June and we end up backstage again. I’m with Chuck, we end up sitting on the bus, Chuck plays Mark some Simple Plan demos.. And at this point in time, the band isn’t even baptized yet. It’s not called Simple Plan. As per legend again, you may have read this, if you know your Simple Plan history quite well, like on old demos, you guys would write ‘Touchdown’. And so Mark is like: ‘Oh you guys don’t have a band name yet?’ And he tried really hard for good like 5-10 minutes to convince Chuck to call the band ‘Three-legged-duck’.”

Seb: “Yes!”

Patrick: “Did you know this story?”

Seb: “Wait, was it ‘One-legged-duck’ or ‘Three-legged-duck’?”

Patrick: “One or three!”

Seb: “Odd number of legs on a duck. Yes. I know this.”

Patrick: “I believe it’s ‘Three-legged-duck’.. And Chuck is like, you know, wants to be polite: ‘Oh yeah, that’s kind of cool..’ But I guess [he] doesn’t love it.”

Seb: “And obviously that’s why Mark keeps going. Cause he sees Chuck.”

Patrick: “And Mark is like ‘Yeah, yeah, keep going, ‘Three-legged-duck’. Someone needs to call their band name ‘Three-legged-duck’! What a cool band name!’ And that didn’t happen but Mark Hoppus tried to convince Simple Plan to be baptized ‘Three-legged-duck’.”

Seb: “That would’ve been great.”

No Pads special #1: How David made Mark Hoppus destroy a vintage TV set

In 2017, Simple Plan are celebrating 15 years since the release of their debut album No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls with a special 15th anniversary NPNHJB worldwide tour: playing all songs from their first album from top to bottom (and a couple other favorites!). After hitting the U.S. and Europe, in the second half of 2017, Simple Plan will return to the USA and also visit Canada, Japan and more with this special once-in-a-lifetime tour [check out all the dates in our Tour section!]. To get you even more excited about the return of the No Pads tour (starting again in August), SimplePlan.cz prepared an exclusive series of “No Pads special” articles, giving you little possibly never-seen-or-heard-before interesting flashbacks to the No Pads era.

We’re kicking off the #1 No Pads special with this very rarely discussed No Pads era story was initially published in an interview for Idobi Radio back in October 2002. In June of that year, Simple Plan filmed their second music video ever – the now-classic ‘I’d Do Anything’, which features Mark Hoppus from Blink 182, who also laid his vocals on a part of this song. One of the reasons why Hoppus was available for filming was because the videoshoot took place in Cleveland, right in the midst of the Simple Plan, Green Day and Blink 182 ‘Pop Disaster tour’, so it was fairly easy to get him and the members of Simple Plan in one place at one time.

If you recall the scene in ‘I’d Do Anything’ that Mark Hoppus is in, the Blink 182 singer is sitting on a rugged couch in a junkyard filled with various old appliances. The prop coordinator decorated the set with a bunch of those to make the junkyard look genuine. However, before placing a particular antique television set, he apparently specifically urged Simple Plan not to touch it, probably assuming they are young and therefore reckless. And oh boy was he right!

David was aware that Mark did not hear the prop coordinator’s plea in between takes and jokingly dared him to break the TV. And you can probably imagine what happened next:

“He got up and took a big brick and totally smashed the TV. We filmed the prop guy’s reaction. His face totally fell.”

“He turned white. ‘That TV’s been in my family for decades.’ It was this super old vintage thing worth like $6,000, and we were like, ‘Uh-oh.’”

VIDEO: Pierre and Callum celebrate end of tour singing along to ‘All The Small Things’ by Blink 182

The last day of June was also the day of the very last Simple Plan show for a little while. Simple Plan performed in Newfoundland and all the way from England they were once again joined by their European guitar tech, who you also know as the lead singer of The Bottom Line – Callum Amies.

The band celebrated the final show before heading home for a couple of weeks of some well-deserved time off by partying and as you will be able to see from the following video, they had a really good time. At one point, the two lead singers – Pierre and Callum – even joined to sing along to Blink 182’s classic – ‘All The Small Things’.
