Chuck had his physical activity studied while playing drums at Warped: see the results!

Back on Warped Tour, Simple Plan’s drummer Chuck Comeau agreed to take part in a very interesting study by Dr. Nadia Azar from the University of Windsor, who’s current research revolves around the topic of drummers’ athletic performance with the goal of “helping drummers play better, faster and stronger while avoiding injuries”, as she states on her university profile.

In order to study Chuck in his natural environment – while playing on stage – two armbands and a heart rate monitor were attached to his body on two different shows on Warped Tour – in Toronto, Canada and in Rochester Hills, MI. The only difference between the sets was that Toronto’s setlist featured one extra song, making it longer and hence the data for each show were expected to differ in some of the results. In her post where she summed up the findings about Chuck’s energy expenditure, Dr. Azar noted that there was one moment furing the show when she was afraid that the collected data might not be as accurate, when Chuck’s armband nearly slipped off during one specific moment of the show. I’m sure you can all guess which one:

‘I knew from the get-go that this was going to be a unique data collection experience. During our first conversation, Chuck mentioned that he does a stage dive/crowd surf at every show…would that be an issue with the equipment? I thought it would probably be fine, but it almost wasn’t…we had a scary moment during the first show where one of the armbands came loose and slipped off his arm! 😱 Thankfully, Chuck managed to catch and hang onto it until the crowd returned him to the stage.. Lesson learned – we locked them down with multiple layers of athletic tape at the next show to make sure it didn’t happen again 😂’

And what were the final findings of Dr. Azar’s study of Chuck Comeau’s physical performance while playing drums? Let’s have a look at the published data!

Total calories burned:

Toronto – 390 calories |||| Rochester Hills – 339 calories
Toronto – 12 calories per minute |||| Rochester Hills – 11 calories per minute

Given the show in Toronto was longer, the number of calories was slightly higher there than in Rochester Hills. According to Dr. Azar, Chuck also burns an average of 12 calories per minute while playing drums and the amount is actually even higher while playing the two most energy-demanding songs ‘Jump’ and ‘Welcome To My Life’, when he burns up to 14 calories per minute. ‘Welcome To My Life’ was apparently also the most intense song at both shows (Chuck also reached 14 cal/min during ‘Jump’ in Toronto). The only time Chuck could “catch a break” during the shows was during his crowdsurfing moment, when his calorie burn dropped to “only” 9 cal/min.

Heart rate:

Toronto – 166 beats per minute |||| Rochester Hills – 160 beats per minute

As far as Chuck’s heart rate goes, his average heart rate in Toronto was again a bit higher than in Rochester Hills. What is very impressive, however is that the results showed that his heart rate in Toronto and Rochester Hills represented 91% and 88% of his age-predicted maximum heart rate, respectively, which, as Dr. Azar notes, are levels that could be compared to those seen in elite football players!

Excercise intensity:

Percentage of time spent at near/at maximum intensity (94 %-100 % of max. heart rate):
Toronto – 28 |||| Rochester Hills – 17

Percentage of time spent in vigorous intensity (77 %-94 % of max. heart rate):
Toronto – 68 |||| Rochester Hills – 77

And finally, Chuck’s overall excercise intensity results tell us that he spends over 70 % of the show in a “vigorous intensity” state, which could be compared to that of a running session and he then spends pretty much the rest of the concert (about 30 %) in an even higher intensity activity level – at his maximum heart rate.

If all of that tells us anything, it’s that (if it wasn’t clear before) – Chuck is definitely not the one to slack off during his performance! We’re definitely all very impressed with his results! And Chuck was certainly also very impressed, as he decided to share them on his social media, adding:

‘I didn’t post this to brag (ok, ok…maybe a little…lol) but I take a lot of pride in the fact that I always give all the energy I have on stage for our fans and I’m stoked that these results indicate that I don’t ever “cheat” and just phone it in and that I truly go all out playing our shows. And I’m also excited to share this with everyone to encourage you to find an activity that will help you push yourself and your body. Maybe you can try drums, a new sport, running or anything else that you will enjoy.’

YouTuber Elton Castee (TFIL) documents his on-stage moment with Simple Plan in a new vlog

Popular American YouTuber Elton Castee, who can pride himself on 1.8 million subscribers on his TFIL YouTube channel, recently published his long-awaited vlog from Warped Tour in Orlando, FL, where he got to perform with Simple Plan alongside Set It Off’s Cody Carson and Story Untold’s Janick Thibault during ‘I’m Just A Kid’ [we’ve already reported on these special on-stage appearances in this article].

In one of his latest vlogs that he released this week, Elton share the story of how he asked Simple Plan if he could be a part of their ‘I’m Just A Kid’ thing they have been doing throughout all of Warped Tour, where Chuck and Pierre switch their roles and while Chuck crowdsurfs in the crowd and Pierre drums, a number of their singer friends are invited on the stage to finish the song with a microphone in their hand.

What’s amazing is that the video Elton posted has already been viewed over 80 000 times in just 2 days since its original upload. Check it out for yourself to see Simple Plan’s special I’m Just A Kid moment from a little different point of view:

Simple Plan release a new comedy sketch: Weekend at Broco’s

As we’re sure you’re well-aware, Simple Plan have always been quite the jokers and once in a while they like to surprise their fans with a funny comedy sketch video. Previously, we’ve lived to see some hilarious and unforgettable sketches such as ‘Do You Got Wifi?‘, ‘You Alright?‘, ‘Pierre’s Day Off‘, ‘Chuck Comeau, a serious man‘, ‘100K on Instagram‘ or ‘I’m a Ninja‘. So to honor the ending of Warped Tour, Simple Plan could not miss out on this great opprotuniry to create yet another comedy sketch – this time featuring Don Broco, the British band that members of Simple Plan got really tight with over this summer on Warped.

The video, entitled ‘Weekend at Broco’s’, spoofs the 1989 comedy ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ and as such the whole plot revolves around Simple Plan unintentionally killing the lead singer of Don Broco, Rob Damiani, by partying too hard and then trying to maintain the illusion for the rest of Don Broco (and the rest of Warped Tour) that he is still alive by making his lifeless body do a bunch of everyday things. The video features a number of special guests – let’s see how many of them you can recognize:

Simple Plan reflect on the end of Warped Tour

On Sunday, one of the most popular alternative touring festivals, Warped Tour, has closed its gates for the very last time, ending on a high note after 24 summers filled with great music, good times, always unpredictable weather and a very special atmosphere. The decision to end Warped Tour with a final cross-country run was announced by Kevin Lyman, Warped Tour’s founder, earlier this year and as such was met with emotional reactions from all around the world, since Warped Tour has over the years managed to become a staple in the alternative music community.

Simple Plan had the wonderful opportunity to be one of the bands who were a part of every single date of this two-months-long tour this year for the last time and on August 5th said goodbye to the Warped stage with a final set in West Palm Beach, FL. After the show, members of Simple Plan expressed their gratitude towards Kevin Lyman and the whole Warped Tour community for taking them under its wings from the very start. Not only thanks to that, Simple Plan have become the second most frequent band on Warped Tour’s lineup.

Check out some of the quotes from Simple Plan’s final goodbyes to Warped:

‘Thank you for the best summer ever, Warped Tour! And for 24 years of amazing bands and music! Thank you for giving our band a chance when we were just starting out and for providing so many people with a place where they could be themselves and who they wanted to be. Thank you, Kevin Lyman, and all the production people, everybody who worked the stages, in catering, who drove the trucks and made this tour happen. We love you and we’re forever grateful. And thank you West Palm Beach for being such an awesome crowd and giving us a spectacular last show.’

‘Warped Tour is officially over. Thanks to all the humans who made it possible and to all the friends I’ve made along he way. So long for now.’

– Pierre Bouvier –

‘I survived the last edition of Warped Tour – and it was an amazing trip! Last night, I came back to my home, to my family and it was so heartwarming. As much as I loved the shows and meeting all the amazing people who came to Warped, I needed to get grounded again and spend time with my tribe. I’d like to thank Kevin Lyman for building such an amazing legacy and for making us part of this year’s celebrations. That man is a visionary and a force of nature. More about that soon.’

– Jeff Stinco –

‘All of this band’s best summers have been on Warped Tour and this one was no exception. A very special thank to the padre himself Kevin Lyman for inviting us on this year and for allowing us to live this amazing achievement with you. Basically every fan I met this summer was amazing! Thanks so much for waiting in line at the signing, even when they told us to stop each day we tried to stick around a little bit longer to get a few more selfies! You guys made this tour happen. You guys make this band. So many thanks.’

‘I’m Just A Kid’ should be Warped Tour’s anthem according to Travis Clark (We The Kings)

With Warped Tour saying goodbye and farewell with today’s very last show, Alternative Press asked a number of artists, who appeared on the tour, which song best describes the atmosphere of Warped and could be considered its “national anthem”.

Many band members put their two cents in on this topic in the video, leaving quite a number of songs as the best contenders for a possible Warped anthem. Sebastien Lefebvre from Simple Plan for example named Pennywise’s ‘Bro Hymn’ as the most appropriate song for a Warped anthem [Seb appears around mark 10:25 in the video].

But our favorite tip for the anthem of Warped definitely came from Travis Clark, the lead singer of We The Kings, who had some very nice things to say about Simple Plan, who’s song ‘I’m Just A Kid’ he’d personally like to see up for this title. Check out the full video at the end of this article, but first, have a look at what Travis said about SP below:

‘If I had to pick one song of We The Kings that I thought was a Warped Tour anthem, it would be a song called ‘Check Yes Juliet’, which is our very first song, you know, that we ever kinda put out and promoted. But a song for the whole tour… I think Simple Plan’s ‘I’m Just A Kid’, which I think was written like 16 years ago for them, or 17 years ago. And it just totally encompasses Warped Tour at its core, where we’re all just kids that love music. And I hear them play it, and people just lost their minds. It’s a really cool thing to be a part of something with, you know, people that I love. I love Simple Plan to death – they are our brothers. And it’s definitely a Warped Tour anthem. Everytime I hear it, I get kinda giddy inside.’
